The method for classifying leather for its production, comprises measuringly detecting or computing power requirement, water consumption, carbon dioxide production and/or chemical oxygen demand of the production in a controlled manner, and arranging a production unit of the leather. The power requirement is detected after individual process steps, which comprise a heating of water and/or a production of water vapor, in a classified manner. The power requirement is evaluated in dependence of the associated carbon dioxide production. The method for classifying leather for its production, comprises measuringly detecting or computing power requirement, water consumption, carbon dioxide production and/or chemical oxygen demand of the production in a controlled manner, and arranging a production unit of the leather. The power requirement is detected after individual process steps, which comprise a heating of water and/or a production of water vapor, in a classified manner. The power requirement is evaluated in dependence of the associated carbon dioxide production and the production process is classified according to the degree of the carbon dioxide production. The power requirement for heating the water is detected with the retanning process and/or for producing the water vapor with the drying process. The chemical oxygen demand is regulated by detecting pH value, bath temperature, float length, barrel rotational speed and/or process running time. During the drying process, heat is recovered from the flowing-off moist hot air and is supplied to the inflow dry air. The electrical energy expended during the production process is converted under inclusion of a concerned official regional factor in a correspondingly produced carbon dioxide quantity. The carbon dioxide quantity developed during the hot water- and water vapor preparation is determined. The total carbon dioxide quantity is determined as total pollution emission during the production steps and is displayed in a specification as carbon dioxide emission per production unit. Flow water brought during mixing cold and hot water at a given temperature is stored and is used during the hot water production. An independent claim is included for a device for classifying leather.
