The starter (10) has a drive (12) e.g. planetary gear, and an electrical machine (11) e.g. starter motor, which is in mechanically effective connection with the drive by an armature shaft (14). The machine is separated from the drive by a separating element (15), which surrounds the shaft. The shaft is provided with a sealing element forming a rotatable seal with a separating element. The sealing element is arranged as an extension component at the shaft by an assembly process, and is formed of steel or plastic.
