An instability warning system for ladders gives warning to the user when one or more sensors under the support feet measure changes in the mechanical loading of the sensors. The warning system is a self contained unit fitted under a foot of the ladder. The warning signal can be audible and/or sensory, e.g. with vibrations imparted onto the ladder.
