The system (1) has a functional unit that is variably positioned or oriented relative to the system. The functional unit has a display unit (6a) including different display modes for displaying images. The functional unit has an input unit including different input modes for controlling the system and/or a supporting device (2). A detecting unit (30) detects actual positioning of the functional unit relative to the system. A switching unit (31) automatically switches the display and the input modes based on the detection of the positioning of the functional unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an imaging system.
