The method involves dividing a raw mammogram (Gr) in low pass, high pass and band pass portions by multiscale segments, and balancing a brightness reduction in a region of the mammogram corresponding to a boundary region of an object. The portions are separately modified from each other and reconstructed to a brightness optimized mammogram. A contrast of pixel value of the brightness optimized mammogram and/or sharpness of structure contained in the displayed object is optimized to produce a backlight mammogram (Gb). An independent claim is also included for a device for processing a digital mammogram.
