The device (100) has a base (102) with an insertion area (104) in which a container used for heating substance i.e. baby food, by water vapor as heat transfer medium is inserted. A positive temperature coefficient heater is provided for heating a wall of the base and for vaporizing water that is poured into the base. The base is formed such that steam guide elements are mountable, where the steam guide elements are exchangeable for different operating methods. The steam guide elements have a covering (110) cooperating with the base and the container. An independent claim is also included for a method for heating baby food in a container.
