The method involves adjusting a set of modulation characteristics of a gas burner by evaluating flame signals. Stabilization time (S) of the flame signals is extended, another set of modulation characteristics is activated, and/or degree of modulation is fractionally and/or gradually reduced, when the stabilization time falls below a preset threshold value. The reduced degree of modulation is obtained in stages during an extended time period. Retention time (V) is extended at one of the stages of the degree of modulation.
