The engine has an ignition device (2) for igniting a gaseous fuel-air mixture. An arrangement of a heating element (5) is selected with respect to a high pressure gas injection (4) such that gaseous fuel that is supplied by the high pressure gas injection defines a volume (7) within a region of the heating element. The heating element actively initiates a self ignition temperature, in the volume, for igniting the gaseous fuel during starting process so that the gaseous fuel serves again as the ignition device of the gas amount that is supplied to a main combustion chamber.
