The instrument has an optical transmitter and an optical receiver connected to an evaluating device. A set of electronic cameras (5, 5') is mounted on a current collector (3) or beneath a sliding strip (2) or a sliding contact, such that the cameras make a triangulation angle with respect to line projectors (7, 7') or the sliding contact. The projectors project optical lines on both sides of a trolley wire (1) over the entire length of the sliding strip, so that the cameras capture optical information and feed the optical information to the evaluating device.
