The method involves preparing a vertical profile of an optical characteristic of a particles and determining a vertical profile of a physical characteristic of the particles by an inversion method from the vertical profile of the optical characteristic. The vertical profile of the physical characteristic is determined by a discrepancy parameter profile. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a device for determining physical characteristics of atmospheric particles; (2) a computer-readable storage medium for storing a program for determining physical characteristics of atmospheric particles; and (3) a computer program element for determining physical characteristics of atmospheric particles.
