The system (100) has a mixer element (102) e.g. open-porous foam body, arranged in flow direction of exhaust gas before a monolithic catalyst element (103). The body is made of metal foam or ceramic foam that is made of silicon carbide. The foam body provides density of 0.1 to 0.9 gram per centimeter cube. The mixer element includes pores with diameter of 200 Pico meter to 800 Pico meter. An internal surface of the foam body is provided with a catalytic active coating. An independent claim is also included for a method for cleaning an exhaust gas stream with an exhaust gas control system.
