The device has a signal generator (3) e.g. LED, and a sensor (4) e.g. opto-electronic sensor, attached to a valuable container (1). A reflector (5) for a signal from the signal generator is provided at a position characterizing a filling level of the valuable container with monetary items. The signal generator radiates electromagnetic waves. The signal generator and the sensor are arranged at a wall (11) of the valuable container, where the wall is turned towards a rear side of a pressure carriage (6). An independent claim is also included for a method for measuring a filling level in valuable containers for the accommodation of monetary items.
