The method involves determining cost for handling errors and a probability of occurrence of errors. Components (8-14) of a system (4) are tested successively for the errors according to different sequences, which are automatically selected, and determined by a decision tree (2), where sum of the costs for handling of the errors weighted with probabilities of occurrence of the errors is kept to be minimum. A sum of operating time is determined for handling the errors. The units are successively tested in a selected partial system order (16) until the error in a fault unit is repaired. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for determining a sequence of steps for handling errors within a system (2) a computer program comprising instructions for handling errors within a system (3) a computer program product comprising instructions for handling errors within a system.
