The method involves modifying a material supply of a fuel cell system (1), so that a transition of a condition of the fuel cell system is introduced to another condition of the fuel cell system. A potential difference is caused between different electrodes and is reduced, and the latter condition is achieved. A step reduction is performed by step balancing of unequal gas distribution by decreasing a portion of degradation- causative material. The step balancing is performed by step short-circuiting of different electrodes, to reduce the potential difference during the transitions. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a safety device for reduction of degradation of fuel cell system (2) a fuel cell system comprising an electrical network.
