The unit (7) has a display unit and a switching unit for alternative separation and production of an electrical connection, where a display surface of the unit corresponds to an operating surface of the switching unit. Multiple programmable symbols and a multi-segment display or a LCD are provided in the display unit. A dark transparent cover is provided for covering the display unit. The switching unit is a key or a main switch. The key exhibits a distance in the range of 3-4 millimeter. An independent claim is also included for a household appliance comprising a switching unit.
