The method involves measuring a preset characteristic parameter by a sorting system (6). A characteristic vector is generated for an object (2), where the vector has a parameter value. The value is reloaded, where the value accepts the preset characteristic parameter for the object. Another characteristic vector is generated for the object, where the latter vector has another parameter value and measures a time point at which the transport of the object is concluded. The latter vector is compared with the former vector by a central computer (3) for determining the object. An independent claim is also included for a device for monitoring the transport of an object i.e. postal item.
