The method involves operating a fan (2) with a predetermined speed, which is smaller than a maximum speed of the fan. A fan drive is switched off, and a measured variable predefined for evaluation of the fan drive is measured. The measured variable is compared with a reference value. The predefined measured variable corresponds to a time of switching off of the fan drive up to the stopping of the fan and corresponds to the speed of the fan within a predetermined time after switching off the fan drive. An independent claim is also included for a control electronics system for a fan, comprising a timer.
