Preparing 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) comprises thermally reacting carbohydrates, preferably monosaccharides, in an ionic liquid and discharging the formed HMF by an extracting agent, where: the extracting agent does not or slightly soluble in the ionic liquid, which is dibutyl ether, the ionic liquid phase containing the carbohydrates is contacted with steam in a room temperature heated zone to form an ionic liquid phase separated extraction phase with a density lower than the ionic liquid phase for the continuous discharge of the extracting agent by reactive extraction of dissolved HMF. ACTIVITY : Fungicide. MECHANISM OF ACTION : None given.
