Detecting anaerobic microorganisms that are capable of degrading aromatic compounds comprises contacting an environmental sample with nucleotide sequences coding for a conserved amino acid sequence of 6-oxocyclohexene-1-carbonyl coenzyme A hydrolase, and detecting any hybridization. Independent claims are also included for: (1) removing aromatic compounds from soils, sediments or water by determining the microbial degradation potential as above and supporting the growth of the detected microorganisms by adding salts or nutrients; (2) nucleotide sequences of formula (I)-(IV); (3) nucleotide sequences coding for peptide sequences SEQ ID NO:5 to SEQ ID NO:18 (not given in the specification); (4) kit for detecting anaerobic microorganisms as above, comprising a primer combination of (I) and (II), (I) and (III), (I) and (IV), a nucleotide sequence coding for SEQ ID NO:5 and a nucleotide sequence coding for SEQ ID NO:6, or a nucleotide sequence coding for one of SEQ ID NO:7 to SEQ ID NO:11 and a nucleotide sequence coding for one of SEQ ID NO:12 to SEQ ID NO:18. 5'-CAGTACAAYTCCTACACVACBG-3'(I) 3'-CRGTCCTYTAGCCGTAMC-5'(II) 5'-TTTTCCTTGTTGVSRTTCC-3'(III) 5'-CTTKATGAAGTCGATSRYGTC-3'(IV) Y : T and C; K : G and T; M : A and C; R : G and A; B : G, T and C; V : G, C and A.
