The device (1) has a drive body guided in a stationary pipe (2). A locking unit (8) locks the pipe at an end region that is turned away from an earth (4), where the locking unit is designed in such a manner that the drive body and/or a payload passes through the locking unit. Evacuating unit and/or high pressure unit induces small pressure in pipe on side of drive body, which is turned away from pipe, than that on side of drive body turned away from earth. The pipe is made from steel or fiber composite material or carbon fiber-reinforced plastic material. An independent claim is also included for a method for transporting a payload from the earth into an orbit of the earth or into space.
