The method involves cooling a component (9), and detecting and evaluating distortions of surface temperature defects of the component by an infrared camera (10). A portion of small amount of liquid i.e. water, in a spraying nozzle (1) is sprayed by pressure of gas stream e.g. compressed air, to form a water spray (6). A surface (8) of the component to be tested is acted upon by the water spray in a pulsed manner. The droplets of the water spray are strongly cooled by steep temperature gradients, and the water spray is homogenously and convectively excited for thermography. An independent claim is also included for a device for testing a surface defect and/or internal defect of a component comprising an infrared camera for detecting distortions of surface temperature defects of the component.
