The method involves rough-machining of a metallic workpiece with constant direct current and finishing the workpiece with pulse current that includes anodic and cathodic pulses. An electrode is fed forwardly without overlapping of oscillation movements, where a pulse period between anodic pulses is shorter than duration of the individual anodic pulse. A change between the rough-machining and the finishing of the workpiece is performed depending on an immersion depth, where an arithmetic average roughness of the workpiece ranges between 0.01 and 0.05. An independent claim is also included for a device for electrolytically machining a metallic workpiece.
