The method involves determining temperature values in two different regions of an exhaust-gas pipe (12), and providing difference of the temperature values. An exhaust-gas treatment element (22) e.g. selective catalytic reduction catalyzer, is arranged downstream of the two different regions, and is controlled based on the difference of the temperature values. Temperature values in areas arranged in downstream and upstream of a component e.g. exhaust-gas treatment element (18), are determined, and one of the temperature values is determined by temperature sensors (14, 16).
