The chuck for retaining fixing elements provided with a respective radial contact surface and a follower profile (4), comprises a reception (12) having the follower profile. The reception is formed by the ends of handles (5), which are arranged longitudinal to the chuck and are formed for opening and locking on axles (7). The side turned away the reception side is present under spring load (9), which presses the handles together. The reception is attached to a compressed air source, which acts as supply channel (2) for the fixing elements fed by the compressed air. The reception is formed by the ends of handles (5), which are arranged longitudinal to the chuck and is formed for opening and locking on axles (7). The side turned away the reception side is present under spring load (9), which presses the handles together. The reception is attached to a compressed air source, which acts as supply channel (2) for the fixing elements fed by the compressed air. The supply channel is adapted in the cross section to the follower profile. The axles of the handles are stored in elongated holes with extensions running in the supply direction of the fixing elements. A stop element is assigned to the reception and hinders the fixing element from further conveyance to the reception. The handles are intended with axial running, protruding strips, which intervene longitudinal slots formed in the follower profile at the shank of the fixing elements. The chuck executes a short rotation around a small angle after terminated friction welding and cuts the shank of the fixing element to a constriction forming a predetermined breaking point.
