The protection device has a stop (18) which is fastened on a support element (1) or on a part fixed on it, on which a closed bonnet rests. The closed bonnet is deformed in elastic or plastic manner during the minimum pressure caused by accident. The stop enables a downward displacement of the bonnet against the support element. The protection device is pivoted over a hinge device against the support element, which is held on a body (2) of the vehicle in force-fit and form fit manner by a holding device (12).
