The method involves determining a postal item (6) preceding in a measurement order, and another postal item (9) succeeding the order. A partial sequence of a measured object order (A) is determined for each postal item such that the sequence includes the determined items and a third postal item that succeeds the determined items. A dataset for a fourth postal item (8) without a readable identification is searched from datasets for postal items contained in the sequence using a characteristic value of the item (8). An independent claim is also included for a device for processing objects.
