The method involves automatically setting a part of a seed-point by an initialization process upstream to a segmentation process i.e. random walker process. The set seed-point is removed and another seed-point is added, before the segmentation process is performed. A probability is determined by the initialization process for pixel or voxel of an image dataset or a region selected from the dataset, where the pixel or voxel belongs to a structure to be segmented or to an image background. An interesting region in the dataset is marked before executing the initialization process. An independent claim is also included for a device for segmenting a structure in an image dataset.
