The method involves measuring length of parking space (2) during parking of a vehicle (1) on the parking space longitudinal to a roadway. A parking trajectory (3) is evaluated based on the measured length, where the parking trajectory comprises an S-shaped section. The vehicle is relocated by dividing the parking trajectory. A collision free departure of the vehicle from the parking space is enabled when the vehicle adopts or attains intermediate position. The vehicle is turned for leaving the parking space when performing measurement. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a vehicle assistant system for performing a method for assisting a driver of a vehicle during parking the vehicle on side parking space longitudinal to a roadway (2) a computer program product with a set of instructions for performing a method for assisting a driver of a vehicle during parking of the vehicle on side parking space longitudinal to a roadway.
