The method involves transporting a valuable document (30) in a transportation direction (T). The presence of transported document is detected by a stationary radiation (50) of electromagnetic waves that are produced by a transmitter (40) i.e. laser diode, and detected by a receiver (60) i.e. photodiode, arranged opposite to the transmitter, where the document is guided through the radiation between the transmitter and the receiver. A bar code of the document is detected such that the rays of radiation reflected from the document are detected by a receiver (70). An independent claim is also included for a valuable document processing machine comprising a transportation path.
