The method involves determining a control difference of a lambda controller depending on a measuring signal (MS1) of an exhaust gas sensor. The lambda controller is operated within an instability area during presence of a predetermined dead time characteristics regarding the measuring signal of the exhaust gas sensor. A quality value is determined depending on a portion of the controller adjusting signal or depending on the control difference over a predetermined time period. Existence or non-existence of an error of the exhaust gas sensor is determined depending on the quality value. An independent claim is also included for a device for operation of an internal-combustion engine.
