The unit has an electronic module (610) with an analog-digital/digital-analog converter for video and/or audio signals. The electronic module in a computer unit produces and/or receives data contents, which are transferred by standardized network protocol e.g. internet protocol network protocol, where the data contents contain audio data, video data, a call signal and/or a door opener signal. A loudspeaker, a speech/hearing cap and/or a microphone are connected to the electronic module. The converter converts analog signal into a digital signal during input of audio signal of the microphone. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a door intercom unit.
