The method involves inputting input characters e.g. alphanumeric characters, in one or multi-dimensional input fields by an input device e.g. mobile telephone. A hierarchical structure of the input fields is presented. An input cell in one input field is activated on level 1 such that the input cell is extended to one or more hierarchical levels. An access code is determined by a predefined sequence of graphical user interactions on applications, which are executable by a device that is to be unlocked. The input fields are configurable in form and color of the user. An independent claim is also included for a device with menu-like control structure with several levels.
