The adapter for an electric drill or cordless screwdriver comprises a right-angled bracket (1) containing the drive shaft (2), tool shaft (3) and gear system (4). A light channel (7) runs around the outside of the bracket which contains an optical fiber, deflecting mirror or other system which changes the direction of illumination from that of the drive shaft to that of the tool shaft.
