The transmission includes four planetary gear sets which control transmission of torque from an input shaft to an output shaft, and each having components e.g. sun gear, planet gears, carrier. Five clutches selectively couple components of one planetary gear set with corresponding components of another planetary gear set, or to the transmission case, and are engaged in combinations of two to establish at least eight forward speed ratios and at least one reverse speed ratio between the input shaft and the output shaft. Five interconnecting members continuously couple components of one planetary gear set to corresponding component of another planetary gear set.
