The device has a dispensing device comprising a dispensing edge for replacing labels (11) provided by a backing web. A cover (37) is adjusted between two positions. The cover provides access to the dispensing edge from outside in one of the positions for removing the label, and blocks access to the dispensing edge in the other position. The cover is adjusted based on a signal passed from a detector unit and/or an error recognition unit that recognizes idleness of the backing web. A linear drive i.e. spindle drive, adjusts the cover.
