The device has an evaluation unit for detecting contact data of the gesture of a user on a touchscreen and for realizing the contact data as control command based on gesture data i.e. movement speed, from a gesture memory. A learning function is activated for detecting the gesture data and storing the gesture data in the gesture memory, where the gesture data exhibits a movement direction or a sequence of movement directions. The evaluation unit is adjusted such that the evaluation unit represents a control instruction. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a cooking device.
