The method involves displaying list items as symbols, with which multiple categories are defined for the list items. Gradual membership to the categories is determined for the list items. The symbols for different positions are displayed on a display (2) of a display device (1) e.g. LCD, for the categories. A position for the symbols associating the list items is calculated relative to the position of the symbols for the categories of the list items depending on the membership. The symbols of the list items and the categories are displayed on the display depending upon the calculated position. An independent claim is also included for a device for representing a list item on a display device of a vehicle.
