The device has a voltage source (39) i.e. switch controller, for producing an operating voltage (Ub) for an LED arrangement. An adjustable current source (41) is associated with the arrangement, for producing operating currents (I1-I3) of the arrangement. A control arrangement (55) controls the operating voltage based on voltages (U1-U3) applied at the current source. The control arrangement has a minimal value generator (47) for generating minimal value signals (m) characterizing the applied voltages. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a lighting device for a motor vehicle.
