A method for applying water retaining layers, e.g. onto retaining walls, canal beds etc., has a floating work station (2) with a belt drive (4) onto which the layers are prepared and moved to a laying system (5) which lays the layers in a continuous manner. The laying system has a ramp whose bottom edge (10) slides along the bed (11) with a controlled pressure. Typical sealing layers include wet clay plus aggregate.
