The method involves detecting surrounding by two image capturing units, whose detection regions are overlapped. An overall picture is generated from a frame detected by the capturing units based on an image processing unit and conversion tables (U1, U2), where the picture shows a vehicle and its surrounding as a bird's eye view. Pixels (B) of the frame are stored in the tables. Positions (P1, P2) of the capturing units and weighing factor are assigned to each pixel. The overall picture is determined and displayed between vehicle elements (1.1, 1.2) by taking into an inclination angle (alpha). An independent claim is also included for a device for monitoring of a surrounding of a vehicle.
