There are provided systems and methods for updating the PF soot load of an engine. In one embodiment, the method may include performing the regeneration in response to both pressure measurements and estimated soot load independently of the pressure-based measurements, wherein during the conditions in which the pressure-based measurements may be inaccurate, the soot load based on operating conditions and earlier pressure-based measurements made during earlier conditions under which the pressure-based measurements are more accurate. In this way, a more continuous monitoring of the load of the particulate filter is provided, e.g. the pressure-based measurements of the most recent accurate measurement and operating conditions that have occurred since such a measurement are used. Thus, a time better controlled regeneration can be provided.
