The method involves operating a set of LED light sources (32.1, 42.1) with a predetermined brightness value to adjust desired light distribution of a light source matrix emitting light. A chain with a predetermined number of individual LED light sources is formed, where the individual LED light sources are supplied with energy from transformer units (33, 43). Turn-on time points and turn-off time points of the LED light sources of the chain are calculated during a pulse width modulation period, so that the number of the LED light sources turned on during the modulation period is minimized. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a lighting device comprising a lighting unit (2) a computer program with a program code unit for executing a method for controlling a lighting unit of a lighting device for a vehicle (3) a computer program product with a program code unit for executing a method for controlling a lighting unit of a lighting device for a vehicle.
