The method involves providing an actuator (4) for regulating elevation and controlling units (1) for controlling a height level (A) of a motor vehicle (5). A modification of the height level of the motor vehicle is automatically activated depending on the situation. A vehicle body is automatically raised during the recognizing of a parking condition of the vehicle, where the vehicle body is automatically lowered during leaving of the parking condition of the vehicle. The modification of the height level is manually activated to facilitate boarding and de-boarding in the vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a device for modifying a height level of a motor vehicle, comprising an actuator.
