A reference matrix of preset reference vectors representing discrete particle size of particles contained in dilute fluid and reference extinction spectrum over preset wavelength range is provided (202). A measurement vector representing extinction spectrum which is measured spectrophotometrically, of particles in dilute fluid is provided (204). The size distribution and concentration of particles in fluid are determined (206) using reference matrix and measurement vector. The determined size distribution and concentration of particles in fluid is outputted (208).
