Preparing tri-n-alkylphosphines (I), comprises: (a) reacting phosphorus trichloride with an aluminum compound (II) at a temperature of less than 200[deg] C; (b) suspending the residue obtained from the step (a) in a non-polar organic solvent or solvent mixture; and (c) subsequently processing the reaction solution obtained from the step (c), where the processing step comprises adding an oxygen-free water and/or an oxygen-free aqueous solution to the product of the reaction step (b), subsequently removing the organic phase from the aqueous phase and distilling the organic phase after drying. Preparing tri-n-alkylphosphines (I), comprises: (a) reacting phosphorus trichloride with an aluminum compound of formula (R1R2R3Al) (II) at a temperature of less than 200[deg] C; (b) suspending the residue obtained from the step (a) in a non-polar organic solvent or solvent mixture; and (c) subsequently processing the reaction solution obtained from the step (c), where the processing step comprises adding an oxygen-free water and/or an oxygen-free aqueous solution exhibiting a pH value of greater than 7 to the product of the reaction step (b), subsequently removing the organic phase from the aqueous phase and distilling the organic phase after drying.
