An assembly (10) applies two coats (30, 32) of a liquid or paste medium to a moving (L) paper web (12). The assembly has a first non-contact application station (14) followed by a scraper blade application station (16). The non-contact application station in a spray unit or a curtain coating unit. The application density (e.g. 12-15 g/m2) at the non-contact station is higher than that of the scraper-blade station. The non-contact station is preceded by a roll coating station. A film coating station is located between the non-contact and the scraper-blade station. Also claimed is a commensurate production process.
