The method involves determining the pressure fall due to a fuel leak flow in a definable volume of a fuel supply system (7), in the form of a pressure fall curve. The pressure fall is determined using pressure sensors. The determined pressure fall curve is compared with a reference curve, in order to determine the fuel grade. A seal unit directs the fuel leak flow into the definable volume of the fuel supply system. An independent claim is also included for a fuel supply system for an internal combustion engine for executing a method of determining the fuel grade of a fuel.
