The method involves detecting an acceleration signal and automatically determining the absolute minimum value and the absolute maximum value of the acceleration signal. A control signal is released for activating a person protection system, when the ratio of the minimum value to the maximum value exceeds a predetermined threshold value. The acceleration signal is integrated or averaged based on a flexible window filter. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling a person protection system, comprising a sensor.
