The tension roller has a central axle (23) protruding on one side and fitted with interchangeable grooved ball bearings (A,B) and a dust cover (19). A revolving sleeve-like roller body has at its proximal end adjoining the axle a radially inwardly projecting solid end wall (19) with a central axial passage for the fixed axle. This passage is formed as a stepped incision passing from the outer face with at least two sections of roughly the same width but with different inner diameters. The axle has a thickened centre section with axially offset adjacent ledges fitting tight with the stepped incision so that the incision forms with the ledges an axial guide on the solid end wall which is sealed from dust and grease. The axle has a central lubricant bore (33) with radial cross bore ending centrally in the gap between grooved ball bearings inside the roller body.
