A process for producing monkey ES cells which comprises obtaining a fertilized ovum by external fertilization or microscopic fertilization with the use of a monkey ovum and a monkey sperm, developing a blastocyst embryo by in vitro incubation with the use of this fertilized ovum, and establishing ES cells by using this blastocyst embryo; the monkey ES cells thus obtained; a method of screening a reagent for tissue- or cell-specific differentiation; and differentiated cells or differentiated tissues having been differentiated from these ES cells. It is expected that these substances are applicable to genetic studies, pathological studies, clinical performances, experimental models, etc. in primates.
